The Fashion Media and Marketing Department at the University of Maryland offers a variety of programs that prepare students for careers in this fast-paced industry. Students majoring in the department are able to choose from a wide variety of concentrations. Within the major, there are four concentrations that students can choose from. The first concentration is on marketing and advertising. Students will learn about print media, such as newspapers, magazines, and television; online media and digital media; design; and consumer behavior. The second concentration is on advertising agencies and their influence on the design industry.
The third concentration focuses on communications programs and digital technologies. Students who elect to take these communications programs will learn about magazine, newspaper, and television publications, as well as Internet use and digital photography. The fourth concentration is on technology leadership, which includes topics such as IT management, social media, e-commerce, and software development. The fourth concentration is on creative industries, such as design, television, music, and film. A cross-departmental program may also include courses in business studies, business law, marketing, and management.
An interdisciplinary program allows students to pursue independent studies in their areas of concentration. In the Public Relations Concentration, students learn about the principles and practices of effective marketing practices. This course utilizes the knowledge of marketing to build public awareness and support for specific societal needs. These courses teach students how to promote and create media events, conventions, and campaigns that promote a social vision. PR students learn about government policies and agencies that affect the public's perception of a brand or organization.
After having taken the Public Relations concentration, students will be ready to focus on a longer program of study, such as the Degree in Marketing. This degree allows marketers to pursue degrees that are directly related to their majors. It enables them to have a four-year degree, while still keeping their day jobs running. There are six months of full-time classes and six months of part-time classes, which can be completed in two years. Marketing specialists can obtain their license after successfully completing a two-year degree program.
Within this type of program, students will study the principles of internet advertising strategies, digital advertising methods, research methods, and interactive marketing strategies. An example of these classes include statistics, web analytics, search engine optimization, and creative industry strategies. Some of the core courses include social media, digital marketing, and online consumer behavior. The duration of these courses can take place over four years; however, some of the more interesting courses take longer, such as the strategic leadership and public relations courses.
Some of the classes offered in the Bachelor of Science in Marketing (BSM) Degree include data mining, digital strategy, and behavioral research methodologies. A short term diploma in digital strategy can be helpful to individuals who wish to become digital marketers within a short period of time. However, the length of these programs may vary according to the program's curriculum.
Public relations programs offer students the chance to learn more about how organizations can promote better public relations strategies. There are a variety of classes that may be required in these programs. In addition to the public relations courses, they will also need to complete internship programs. Most of these programs take up to four years and require a minimum of two semesters each year.
Students may be able to find a course that fits their schedule and their goals. This is why there is a capstone project that needs to be completed for every two years of graduate school. A capstone project is a final project in any of the following areas: digital strategy, web analytics, public relations programs, social media marketing, and web analytics.
